Shikoku pilgrimage
Shikoku pilgrimage to the 88 sacred sites (temples)(No.1 & 2)

The Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, a circuit of 88 temples designed to release people from their misfortune, was created by the monk Kukai over 1,200 years ago. Travelling to these temples in this fashion is known as “henro”. Temple number 1, Ryozen Temple, can be found in Tokushima, as well as all the temples from here to No.23. Yakuo Temple. Nowadays, people travel the circuit not only for faith but as a healing journey, and others travel by taxi, tour bus and other means.

Naruto whirlpools
Naruto whirlpools from Naruto bridge

The whirlpools of Naruto Straits are amongst the three most dramatic in the world. Generating countless whirlpools of sizes ranging up to 20m in diameter, the currents here are a true spectacle of nature. One of the options to view the whirlpools is an observatory that offers a view through glass viewing panels from a height of 45m above the sea. Sightseeing boat trips also allow for an up-close and personal view of the whirlpools.
